Rethink: Talking about firearm injury and gun violence

AFFIRM and University of Colorado’s Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative featured guest speakers Rob Pincus, Jill Harkavy-Friedman, and Fatimah Loren Muhammad as they discussed preferred terminology for talking about firearms, suicide, homicide, and assault.


2019 Department of Defense/Veteran Affairs Suicide Prevention Conference

Evan Polzer discusses how suicide prevention organizations can partner with local firearm retailers to address suicide deaths in their communities. Outlining a series of program directives, this project aims to assist military partners in implementing some of these solutions to help prevent Service Member and Veteran suicides.

ACS COT Hosts Inaugural Firearm Injury Prevention Summit

A total of 43 professional medical and injury prevention organizations and the American Bar Association met February 10–11 for the inaugural Medical Summit on Firearm Injury Prevention. Hosted by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT), the Summit brought together national health care and legal leaders committed to reducing firearm-related deaths, injuries, and disabilities.

Developing a firearm storage decision aid to enhance lethal means counseling

In October 2018, the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine held a workshop: "Health Systems Interventions to Prevent Firearm Injuries and Death." Dr. Betz spoke on her group's work to develop a lethal means decision aid for firearm storage in times of suicide risk.


Training for Physicians about Firearm Safety

A leading cause of death and injury, gun violence is significant public health problem facing communities across the country. In potentially the first event of its kind, emergency medicine physicians had the opportunity to learn in-person about firearm safety and how to educate patients about the proper handling and storage firearms.

Ladies Night at Centennial Gun Club

The Colorado Firearm Safety Coalition has teamed up with Centennial Gun Club to present suicide prevention information during "Ladies Night" events at the club.

As the women prepared to shoot, coalition members talk to attendees about suicide prevention basics, including "red flags" to watch out for and the importance of locking up firearms during times of risk.
